An allergy is an abnormal reaction of the body to an innocuous substance. By allergy we mean body allergy. But like body allergy, eye allergy also occurs. Allergy is a very common eye disease. Eye allergies can range from mild to severe. This disease can occur at any age from childhood to old age. The symptoms of this disease are usually itchy eyes, watery eyes, photophobia, red eyes etc.
The symptoms cause a lot of distress even if the vision is not disturbed in the initial stage. The symptoms of this disease are more or less with the change of season. Serious complications can occur in cases of long-standing disease. Such as visual disturbances, macular opacities, high eye pressure and eyelid deformities.
Causes
of Allergy: Environmental factors are the main cause of eye allergy. But there
is definitely an influence of heredity. Due to which some are affected and some
are not affected due to being in the same environment. Those that cause this
abnormal reaction in the eyes on contact are called allergens. There are about
800 types of allergens in nature. Allergens are generally of two types –
external and internal. External allergens are the main cause of allergies.
Internal allergens include – bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections.
External allergens are generally of four types. Allergens that enter the body
through inhalation include – pollen from flowers or grass, house or street
dust, animal dander, etc. Allergens that enter the body through food include -
beef, duck eggs, hilsa fish, shrimp, eggplant, etc. Drugs that cause eye
allergies include - drugs like gentamicin and neomycin. Apart from this, many
people use cosmetics and kajal to enhance the beauty of eyes. Because of this
there is an irritating disease like allergy in the eyes. Many insect bites can
also cause eye allergies. Many people are allergic to extreme cold and extreme
heat.
Types
of Allergies:
Seasonal
allergic conjunctivitis.
Chronic
allergic conjunctivitis.
Atopic
keratoconjunctivitis.
Atopic
blepharoconjunctivitis.
Vernal
keratoconjunctivitis.
Giant
papillary conjunctivitis.
Seasonal
allergic conjunctivitis is the most familiar allergy. Its effect is usually
seen in spring. It is usually less complicated. Itchy eyes may be accompanied
by a runny nose and some coughing. With the end of spring, the symptoms
gradually subside. Perineal allergic conjunctivitis occurs all year round. But
the symptoms are more or less. Atopic keratoconjunctivitis (Atopic
kerato-conjunctivitis) is commonly associated with skin inflammation, eczema
and asthma. The complications of this disease are very high. This disease can
cause opacity of the lens and cataract, which is one of the causes of
blindness. Vernal kerato-conjunctivitis usually occurs in children and
adolescents and boys are more affected. After the age of fourteen the symptoms
gradually subside. But if the condition is not treated in time, it can lead to
permanent amblyopia, due to which vision never returns to normal. Children with
eye allergies should be under the supervision of an ophthalmologist. Many a
times it is seen, the hammer has been using steroid drugs for a long time on
the advice of doctors or inexperienced doctors. This causes high pressure in
the eye (glaucoma), another cause of permanent blindness. Therefore, in no case
should you use steroids without the advice of a specialist doctor.
Treatment
and Remedies: Remedies are key in treating allergies. One thing we should keep
in mind, the above mentioned allergens may not apply to everyone. Different
allergens are responsible for different people. Let's say, one person is
allergic to beef, another is allergic to hilsa fish. So the sufferer has to
figure out what the allergy is. Accordingly, the responsible material should be
eliminated. Sunglasses should be used to protect from dust. Stay away from
flower molecules.
