With the spread of information technology, the exchange of information on digital platforms around the world has become easier. As a result, the education system, social media and various types of content management have faced new challenges. Content-based filtering, monitoring and assessment can play a very important role in addressing such challenges. In the current digital age, analysis, verification and control of information has become an essential aspect, especially in the education system and social media.
Content-Based Filtering Key : Content-Based Filtering is a type of recommendation process, where new content (images, information, audio-video) is suggested based on the user's interests and previous activity. This method basically analyzes the user's preferred content and applies an appropriate filtering method to show new content accordingly. It works based on the user's activity or surfing through artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning.
Content Monitoring and Assessment Key : Content monitoring refers to the monitoring of information or content shared on a particular platform. Through this, it is possible to identify and prevent unnecessary, harmful or illegal content (hate speech, hatred, provocative audio-video, pornography).
It is especially used for social media, e-learning platforms and online streaming services, where there is a free flow of information. Content assessment is the process where the quality and validity of shared content is verified. It helps to ensure the acceptability and accuracy of user information. It is used on various platforms to verify the truthfulness of information, prevent rumors and prevent misinformation.
The success of content filtering and monitoring in different countries of the world is remarkable and its use has become undeniable. United States: Various social media platforms in the United States, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, use advanced AI technology for content-based filtering and monitoring. They have their own policies and strategies to filter and remove rumors, fake news, and hateful comments. For example, during the 2020 presidential election, Facebook and Twitter used machine learning technology to detect fake news and misinformation and filter content. China: The government in China strictly controls content monitoring and filtering. There is strict surveillance of internet usage and no information can be published without government approval. The Chinese government blocks illegal and unnecessary content through firewall technology, which is known as the 'Great Firewall'. European Union: Content-based filtering and monitoring is used in European countries for cybersecurity and personal data protection. The European Union specifically audits digital services to prevent the spread of fake news and harmful content on social media. The protection and privacy of personal data is ensured under the 'General Data Protection Regulation' (GDPR).
Need and usefulness of content-based filtering and monitoring : In the socio-economic context of Bangladesh, the need for content filtering and monitoring is increasing. The reasons for this are: 1) Prevention of fake information and rumors - The spread of fake information and rumors through social media is a big problem in a country like Bangladesh.
Especially, the spread of misinformation about the political situation, social unrest and religious sensitivities creates confusion among the common people. It will be possible to identify rumors and fake information through content filtering and monitoring. 2) Development of education - The field of education in Bangladesh is increasingly changing and new technologies are being added constantly. However, despite this, the pace of development of the education system is still far behind. The use of modern technology in the education sector is very important to overcome the economic, social and technological limitations of the country. Content-based filtering is an important factor for the education system in Bangladesh.
Need for a person-centered education system: The education system in Bangladesh is still dependent on traditional curriculum-based education. However, different students may have different learning styles and interests. Content-based filtering can bridge this gap. It is able to provide appropriate educational materials according to the learning style of each student. If specific educational content is provided based on the subjects that students are interested in, students will be more motivated and the quality of learning will also increase.
Finding the right content from a wealth of educational content: There are thousands of educational content on the internet, from which finding the right and necessary information can sometimes be costly and tedious. Content-based filtering relieves the user of the hassle of finding the content of his interest and displays the right educational content.
Growth in Digital Education: Digital education is growing in Bangladesh, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a shift towards online education. Content-based filtering can more effectively engage students in online education platforms, where students will be able to access new and quality educational content according to their interests and needs.
Cyber Security and Prevention of Pornography: Minors can easily come into contact with pornography and other harmful content through the Internet. Through content filtering and real-time monitoring, it will be possible to control the flow of pornographic and harmful content on online platforms. In the current social context, filtering and real-time monitoring are very timely to prevent the free flow of pornography, ensure the proper mental development of children and adolescents, and facilitate parenting for parents. The main benefits of content-based filtering and monitoring are- 1) Providing personalized education: It helps in creating personalized learning experiences for students.
When new content is provided based on the subject that students are most interested in, they are able to understand the subject more deeply. In this way, each student can get the necessary educational content based on his/her interests and skills, and through filter tuning, teachers can also provide their students with the necessary educational-supporting information and resources, which is helpful in improving the quality of education. 2) Data Analysis and Verification: Content-based filtering and monitoring helps users analyze and verify data. It helps maintain the quality of information in the education system and plays an important role in preventing fake information. 3) Cybercrime Prevention: Cybercrime is increasing through the Internet. Content monitoring can act as a preventive measure against cybercrime, such as hacking, spreading fake information, and harmful activities.
Application of Content-Based Filtering and Monitoring in the Context of Schools, Colleges, and Universities in Bangladesh: The application of content-based filtering and monitoring in the education system of Bangladesh is promising.
Although the country is still technologically backward in many ways, the use of digital solutions is essential for the development of the education system. 1) At the school level: Various types of educational content are provided to students in schools. However, if appropriate content is provided according to the needs and interests of the students, they will be able to learn better. Through content filtering, it will be possible to show the right content to the students as well as block harmful content. 2) At the college level: College students are interested in various subjects and they need specialized content. Through the use of content filtering, the necessary information and research content can be easily provided to them, which will enhance the quality of their education. In addition, it will be possible to prevent the spread of any kind of fake information or harmful content by using content monitoring. 3) At the university level: At the university level, students try to gain in-depth knowledge on a specific subject. Through content-based filtering, they will be able to get the right information from various research papers, articles, books and lectures. This can help in research activities and make the necessary resources easily available to students.
Content filtering and monitoring to prevent rumors and fake information on social media: Rumors and fake information are widespread in Bangladesh on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Such information can be controlled using content monitoring and filtering technology. Rumor prevention: The spread of rumors on social media is a big problem. For example, during the Corona pandemic and the current student movement, various parties created confusion among the people by spreading fake information and rumors. Using content monitoring and filtering technology, it will be possible to identify rumors before they spread. Fake information prevention: It is possible to verify the authenticity of any information using content monitoring and assessment. If AI-based filtering technology is used to identify fake information, it will be possible to block fake content. Pornography prevention: Minors can easily come into contact with pornographic content through the internet, which is psychologically and socially harmful. It is possible to block pornography and other harmful content on the Internet using content filtering, monitoring, and assessment technology.
Challenges and solutions in implementing content filtering, monitoring and assessment technologies in Bangladesh:
There are some challenges in implementing content-based filtering in the socio-economic context of Bangladesh. It may be somewhat difficult to implement it, especially due to the lack of technological infrastructure, internet facilities, and appropriate technology in educational institutions in the country. Internet facilities are still inadequate in rural areas, as a result, the effectiveness of content-based filtering may be low there. The use and implementation of such sophisticated technologies is difficult without the lack of proper and trained manpower and the formulation of policies. It is challenging but not impossible to formulate policies for filtering and monitoring according to the utility, keeping in mind issues such as free flow of information, right to information, and freedom of expression in a democratic country. Coordination among all stakeholders is required in this regard. The government's IT, Ministry of Communications, BTRC, Internet Service Providers, Network Experts, IT Industry, IT Experts (Software and Hardware), Socio-Economic Analysts, Education Analysts, Law and Security Analysts, Parents and Guardians should all be involved in this matter.
Finally, it has been proven that the use of content-based filtering, monitoring and assessment will play a very important role in the education system and social media in Bangladesh.
Its effectiveness in providing quality and necessary content for students and preventing rumors and fake information through social media is immense. However, this requires integrated policies, legislation and proper implementation.
