In Chittagong, women and men are suffering from two types of cancer. Breast cancer is more common among women and oral cancer is more common among men. This picture was found in a review of the data of patients admitted to Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital, the only cancer treatment center in Greater Chittagong. In addition, cervical cancer, colon and rectal cancer, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer and lung cancer are more common in women in this region.
Doctors say that dietary habits,
consumption of tobacco products, smoking, and use of drugs are also common.
Moreover, in addition to the issues discussed among women, hygenic factors and
lack of awareness are also increasing the risk of cancer. Therefore, experts
advise everyone to be aware of the elimination of cancer.
According to the data,
25,252 patients were treated in the outpatient department of the cancer
department of Chamek Hospital last year (2024). Of these, 5,658 were new
patients. Of them, 3,138 were men. The rest were women. In addition, 3,108
patients were admitted to the inpatient department. Of them, 1,288 were men and
the remaining 1,820 were women. 20 percent of men are affected by oral cavity
cancer. Next is lung cancer at 15 percent. On the other hand, the rate of
breast cancer among women is 24 percent. And 17 percent are affected by uterine
cancer.
Dr. Ali Azgar Chowdhury,
Associate Professor of Radiotherapy Department at Chamek Hospital, said,
"Currently, men are more affected by oral cavity cancer and women by
breast cancer. In this case, there is no alternative to awareness. Because the
biggest weapon in the fight against cancer is awareness and coordinated
efforts. The horror of cancer must be prevented with the collective efforts of
everyone."
Talking to doctors, it has
been learned that among the new patients, there is an alarming increase in the
number of young people. Especially women under the age of 50 are being affected
by breast cancer. Even among them, there are young people.
