75 percent of dengue patients in Chittagong this year were infected with Dengue 2 serotype (type). Additionally, 11 percent of patients were infected with Den-1 serotype and 14 percent of patients were infected with Den-3 serotype. However, none of the four dengue serotypes, the latest Dengue-4 serotype, was found in any of the dengue patients this year. 5 percent of the infected patients have previously been infected with dengue. The remaining 95 percent were newly diagnosed dengue patients.   These data have come out in a study conducted on 1 thousand 550 dengue patients in Chittagong. Under the supervision of Asperia Health Research and Development Foundation, researchers from six institutions in Chittagong conducted this research on dengue.

The six institutions are - Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Chittagong, Department of Medicine and Paediatrics, Chittagong Medical College, Chittagong General Hospital, Bangladesh Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (BITID), International Diarrheal Research Center Bangladesh (ICDDRB) and Next Generation Sequencing, Research and Innovation Lab Chittagong.

According to the study, 65% of dengue patients in Chittagong are men, one in every 5 dengue patients is a child. Also, several areas of Chittagong have been identified as hotspots. Moreover, 70% of those found to have serotype-1 in Chittagong were children. Dengue-affected children are more prevalent in urban areas, with 70% of the children coming from urban areas. Dengue serotype-2 is more prevalent among adults in both urban and rural areas.   Which is about 75 percent. Fever predominates in 99% of patients, but febrile symptoms occur in 100% of children.

60 percent of dengue patients live in 5 areas: 60 percent of the total dengue patients in Chittagong are residents of five areas of the city. Which researchers identified as hotspots. These five areas are - Baklia, Chawkbazar, Kotwali, Doublemooring and Bayezid Bostami in the city. In addition, the research has revealed the record number of dengue patients in four out of 15 upazilas of Chittagong. These upazilas are - Sitakund, Hathajari, Patia and Karnaphuli.

40 percent of patients did not use mosquito nets: 40 percent of dengue patients in Chittagong have become indifferent to hanging mosquito nets. 20% of infected people do not know that mosquitoes are the main cause of dengue.   15% of people do not know this fact that if there is stagnant water, the spread of dengue mosquitoes increases.

Ignorant and less educated people are more affected by dengue: Research has found dengue prevalence higher among less educated people. Researchers said that 45 percent of dengue victims did not study more than fifth grade.   This is due to lack of awareness about dengue transmission.

Those who were involved in the research: The director of the research work was the director of Esperia and the doctor of Chamek's medicine department. Abdur Rab. The main researcher was Dr. Chamek's head of medicine department. MA Sattar, co-director of the project was Dr. Chamek. Abul Faisal Md. Dr. Nuruddin Chowdhury and Chittagong General Hospital. HM Hamidullah Mehdi, the co-principal researcher was Professor of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Department of Chabir. Adnan Mannan and ICDDRB scientists. Mustafizur Rahman.

Dr. Chamek's doctor was also involved as a researcher. Maruful Quader, Dr. Noor Mohammad and Hamid Hossain Sagar, BITID lab in charge Dr. Zakir Hossain, Dr. Fatikchari Health Complex. Imrul Kaiser, Chabir teacher Mohabbat Hossain and Afroza Akhtar Tanbi, Dr. Chittagong General Hospital. Tarekul Majeed. The laboratory work was conducted by Ishtiaq Uddin Ahmed and Kalyan Chakma, Tanzina Akhter, Ismail Al Rashid.

Recommendations and suggestions: Several suggestions and recommendations have been highlighted by the researchers to prevent dengue. Quick steps should be taken to clear waterlogging and waterlogging in identified hotspots. Effective measures should be taken to prevent water logging and necessary initiatives should be taken to raise awareness in this regard. Effective initiatives should be taken to increase awareness among the less educated and low income people.
